10 Costly Exterior Painting Mistakes Homeowners Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Giving the outside of your home a fresh coat of paint has so many benefits… when done right.

The most common exterior painting mistakes we see homeowners make are skipping the surface prep, painting in poor weather, using cheap paint, applying insufficient coats, and hiring professionals based on price alone. Errors like these cost Gold Coast homeowners BIG because of flakey, cracked paint, and ugly, uneven finishes, that usually require complete repaints that could have been avoided.

We’ve helped Gold Coast homeowners for over 20 years so we know what you need to do the job right. And, whether you’re tackling a DIY project or hiring contractors, understanding what goes wrong before you even start can prevent expensive do-overs that show up months later when your paint begins to fail.

DIY Painting Mistake #1: Choosing colours without testing in natural light

When in stores, you’re looking at tiny colour chip samples under artificial store lighting, however our Gold Coast sun dramatically changes how colours appear in the natural light.

Make sure that you test your chosen colours properly by buying sample pots and painting large sections (1m x 1m minimum) on different sides of your house. Observe at different parts of the day before committing to ensure that you are happy in any light, and avoid this DIY painting mistake.

Mistake #2: Skipping or rushing surface preparation

Proper prep involves pressure washing, scraping all loose paint, sanding rough areas, filling cracks, and treating mold and will take 40-50% of your overall project time. Salt buildup on Gold Coast homes and humidity damage require thorough cleaning, and if you don’t prep properly, your paint can fail within 1-2 years, as opposed to 7-10 years.

Mistake #3: Painting in the wrong weather conditions

Our wild weather creates specific challenges – high humidity over 70% causes slow drying, afternoon storms ruin fresh paint, and extreme heat above 35°C makes paint dry too fast. Instead, paint when it’s 15-30°C, when humidity’s below 70%, and when there’s no rain for 48 hours before and after. Autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) are ideal seasons for painting.

Mistake #4: Using the wrong paint type or cheap paint

Never use interior paint on exteriors, and make sure you choose premium paint over budget paints. Budget paints require more coats and need repainting every 2-3 years vs 7-10 years for premium paint. And remember, Gold Coast needs high UV resistance, mold inhibitors, salt-air tolerance, and flexibility, which brands like Dulux Weathershield, Taubmans Endure, and Wattyl Solagard include.

Did you know: Premium paint sits around $50 per litre versus $30 for cheap paint, however it saves money over time due to less frequent repainting.

Mistake #5: Ignoring or painting over damage

Paint traps moisture against damaged areas, accelerating decay, so make sure you fix wood rot, cracked render, rusted metal, and gaps around windows before painting. Cutting corners costs more in the long run, as a small $200 repair now could cost over $2,000+ down the track if left unchecked.

Mistake #6: Wrong sheen or finish selection

Always use flat or low-sheen paint to hide imperfections, as semi-gloss paint on your main walls will make every flaw stand out. Don’t forget to use satin or semi-gloss paints on trims, doors, and windows for durability and to avoid that “flat” look.

Mistake #7: Insufficient coats

Always paint a minimum of 2 topcoats. A primer plus 2 topcoats is a must for colour changes or bare surfaces, and 3+ coats is essential when changing from dark to light colours. Skipping coats creates a patchy finish and reduces the lifespan of your paint, so getting it right from the beginning is absolutely worth it.

Mistake #8: Poor or no priming

Prime all surfaces, areas with stains, and over dramatic colours, as skipping primer will cause paint to peel, stains or colours to bleed through, and will result in uneven coverage.

Pro tip: Gold Coast properties need special primers for salt-damaged surfaces and fungicidal primers for mould-affected areas.

Mistake #9: Neglecting trim and details

Painting everything the same colour creates a flat look. Use a complementary trim colour even if just 1-2 shades different to create depth and highlight your home’s architectural features.

Mistake #10: Hiring professionals based on the lowest quote only

Always vet painters by checking their licenses, verifying insurance, past projects, and always get detailed written quotes explaining preparation, coats, and materials included.

Red flags typically include quotes 20%+ below average, vague scope, no written contract, requesting full payment upfront, or no insurance verification. And while cheap quotes may seem appealing, they usually cut proper preparation, avoid quality paint, apply insufficient coats, and offer no warranties.
